The Reincarnation of Living Buddhas

The evolution of the identification system for reincarnated leaders in Tibetan Buddhism.

The Reincarnation of Living Buddhas

The reincarnation of spiritual leaders in Tibetan Buddhism is unique amongst the world’s religions, and has been evolving since it was first introduced in the 14th century in the Karma Kagyu system.

This film by the China Global Television Network (CGTN) looks at the various methods that are used, and which are current amongst the spiritual authorities in Tibet.

Subtitled: “How is the Dalai Lama chosen” it is, of course, setting the ground for the Chinese Govt. to have a say in who the next Dalai Lama will be, preferably one sympathetic to the authorities in Beijing.

This does not mean however that the information given in the film is inaccurate, or that it doesn’t reflect the history of the system, only that it should be looked upon critically, as there are vested interests involved.

The history itself is quite fascinating, and was something I haven’t seen covered in other films on the subject of reincarnation in Tibetan Buddhism, so is well worth studying to understand the system better.
