The Maoists on one side and the Army on the other—and Tashi in the middle. What good can he do?

Supermonk

This is an interesting fable set during the Nepalese civil war, with Maoists on one side and the Government forces on the other. Both forces are entrenched around the monastery, and the army is looking for any who might have evaded capture.

The novice Tashi likes films, and dreams of being a hero himself one day. His Abbot teaches him that he must first be good and kind. He gets his chance when Maoist forces are surrounded by the army, and one Maoist boy of Tashi’s age seeks refuge in the monastery.

Tashi manages to get him a razor and robes (taken from other novices) and helps him to evade the army and make his escape. Before doing so he throws away his gun, and then goes off frolicking down the hill. In his own way, Tashi has helped him get a fresh start in life.
