Chöd and Machig Labdrön

Posted on October 9, 2026October 9, 2026 by Dharma Documentaries
The life, practices and teachings of Machig Labdrön, an 11th century Tibetan female master.

Chöd And Machig Labdrön

This another very fine video from Awakening Purple Light, this time on the renowned Machig Labdrön, and her practice of Chöd (cutting off) practice in 11th century Tibet.

The story begins with a remarkable young girl child who could recite texts when she was 3-years old, and by 8 had mastered the very difficult Prajñāpāramitā texts, and was much in demand.

Rather than continue a career she was much in demand for, she developed the unique practice of Chöd. Combining Prajñāpāramitā philosophy with tantric methods, her practice involves offering one’s own body as a feast to gods and demons to sever the root of ego-clinging.

Remarkably, Chöd is one of the few lineages that originated in Tibet and was subsequently exported back to India. She remains an iconic symbol of fearless compassion and female wisdom, and the practice has crossed lineages in Tibet itself.

The video has a good narration, occasionally let down by the AI reader, and fine AI graphics.

A storybook about her life can be found on my Dharma Storybooks website.
