This is an excellent documentary from Thai PBS about the Zen tradition in Japan, as part of The Buddha Code series. It follows a sincere novice, Eto Taijun, as he seeks—and gains—entry to the strict Rinzaiji Temple west of Tokyo. After 3 days asking he eventually gains entry and then undergoes intensive training for a year.
The film, besides following Eto Taijun’s journey, also talks Abe Sohtetsu, who explains Zen principles, and why the training is so difficult. The film also talks a sideways look at the various martial arts that have developed under Zen’s influence.
The film is so well-made I have tried—and so far failed—to find the other episodes in the series, which I think should really be released by PBS as a public service to understanding the various Buddhisms that have developed in Asia.
