Anāthapiṇḍika, the Foremost Male Benefactor

The story-cycle around the Buddha’s great disciple, Anathapindika and his family.

Anāthapiṇḍika, The Foremost Male Benefactor

This is another of the excellent animated films produced by devotees around the Wat San Francisco temple. This one concerns Anāthapiṇḍika, who was considered the foremost male benefactor of the Buddha and the Saṅgha.

It starts with Anāthapiṇḍika on a business trip to Rājagaha, where he meets his friend, another rich man, who tells him of the appearance of a Buddha in the world. Anāthapiṇḍika meets with the Buddha and invites him to his home town of Sāvatthī, where he puchases and builds the Jetavana monastery.

It continues with a series of stories about a young boy who worked one half day for Anāthapiṇḍika and received a heavenly reward; a misguided Deva who lived in his house, who was converted; his son Kāḷa, who was persuaded to listen to Dhamma and became a sotāpanna; his daughter-in-law Sujātā, who was proud and demanding, and who was the occasion for an important teaching; his youngest daughter Sumanā, who was an anāgāmī; his nephew who squandered all that was given to him.

It closes with the story of Anāthapiṇḍika on his death-bed and the teachings he received, and his important intervention so that lay people would gain access to the Buddha’s deepest teachings.

This is a rich collection of stories, and is engagingly told throughout, by this talented team.
