This episode in The Mark of Empire series looks at the ancient kingdom of Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka, which lasted around 1,500 years. From my point-of-view, having lived in lanka for 15 years, it is one of the most interesting of the episodes.
Anuradhapura’s kingdom was built and endured so long because of the way they engineered the water resources. Believe it or not Sri Lanka has no natural lakes, all the magnificent lakes you see are man-made, sometimes so large they are called sāgaras, oceans.
Besides delving into the ancient kingdom’s history and remains, this episode looks at what cultural remains have been passed down, which includes festivals, martial arts, stonework and painting. Peter Lee, as always, gets into the work himself, something which is rather endearing about the series.
