This is a short but very informative look at the Daitoku-ji Temple, a Rinzai school Zen Buddhist temple in the Murasakino neighborhood of Kita-ku in the city of Kyoto. It is not one, but a whole series of temples grouped together on 23 hectares.
The film looks not just at the temple, but also its relationship with its surroundings, talks to its priests, and examines the symbiotic relationship with Shinto, the nature and spirit worshipping belief system in Japan.
We also see how it ingrates the arts into its life, with the Zen gardens, a tea ceremony, and performacnes by master percussionist, Stomu Yamash’ta in a dance and music performance in the main shrine; and more.
