Biosphere by Jennifer Athena Galatis

Posted on September 7, 2012December 22, 2014 by Dharma Documentaries
Non-verbal film about Planet Earth by Jennifer Athena Galatis having footage from space, time lapse sequences, monastic dances, undersea footage and sequences shot in shopping malls.

This is a mainly non-verbal film about Planet Earth by Jennifer Athena Galatis, who filmed parts of it, edited it and composed most of the music.

Biosphere

There are various parts to the film:

  • Biosphere Intro (NASA)
  • Cosmos (New York and Australia)
  • Noosphere (Bhutan)
  • Hydrosphere (Bali and Aquarium)
  • Le Monde (Montreal)
  • Earth/Cities (New York, California and Paris)

The film has many different styles, slow live footage of the Discovery take-off, time lapse sequences, monastic dances, undersea footage and sequences shot in shopping malls.

As it also has an ambient soundtrack it definitely has echoes of Reggio’s Koyaanisqatsi and others in the genre, but in this case there are some short sequences that have narration (by a mechanical reader), giving information about the biosphere, etc.

If you like these unified visual and soundtrack experiences, without much narration, as I do, then you will find this is a very well-produced film in the genre, with some memorable sequences.
