Life on Inle Lake has hardly changed for centuries and all the traditions are maintained there, including close family life, hard work in the fields or on the lake itself, and communal endeavours to develop the village.
This film by Christopher Gerisch, originally for German TV, is a delightful, respectful and insightful look at the life of the villagers who live there, looking at how they make their living, their children at school, and also at how their lives revolve around their Buddhist faith and astrology.
Although life in hardly idyllic, the feeling one gets is how connected everyone is to each other and to their families and traditions, something far removed from the isolated and alienated life in the city.
