Koyasan, The Sanctuary of Shingon Buddhism

Posted on February 6, 2026February 6, 2026 by Dharma Documentaries
A visit to the Koyasan group of temples in Japan to find out their history and present day standing.

Koyasan, The Sanctuary of Shingon Buddhism

This is one of the Spiritual Explorers series made by NHK. In this episode Jamell Tagle, a Philipino mother of four living in Japan, visits Koyasan, which houses around 100 temples, and is the headquarters Shingon Buddhism in Japan, where she sees the temples and meets some of the monks.

Shingon Buddhism is the esoteric tradition in Japan, and was founded by Kobo Daishi (aka Kukai) in the 9th century. It now houses the head temple of the sect, Kongobuji, as well as the mortal remains of Kukai, and is one of the holiest places in Japan.

Jamell finds the peace and compassion at the place a bit overwhelming at times, and one can feel how much stress she is under trying to bring up her large family. Fortunately she meets some good monks who console and guide her in meditation, and hopefully she can intergrate that into her everyday life.
