Stories from Ladakh

Posted on October 4, 2024October 4, 2024 by Dharma Documentaries
Three stories about people in Ladakh: a nun, a driver and a film-maker.

Stories from Ladakh

This is the first of series of films in the series Somewhere on Earth produced by French TV. The first is a very sensitive film by Scott Sneider telling three stories from Ladakh that help give an overview of the country, its people and the challenges it faces.

The first story is about a young Buddhist nun, Dorje, who has been studying traditional medicine in Delhi, but is now back in Ladakh and helping people as best as she can. We see her in her practice at the Naropa Festival in Leh, one of the biggest festivals of its kind in Ladakh. And we see her at her village, where she meets with her very supportive mother, and goes into the hill to pick medicinal herbs.

The second story is about the lorry driver Namgyal who picks up supplies in Leh and delivers them to very remote areas in Ladakh, thus providing a very essential lifeline for remote communities in the country. He also goes home to his mother’s village, as his work is the main support for his family. We also see him on the dangerous roads and sleeping in his truck in the most amazing countryside.

The third story is about Stanzin Dorjai Gya who has become the country’s first indigenous documentary film-maker. He is also involved in sustainability in the local communities. One of his big successes as a film-maker was the award winning film about his sister called The Shepardess of the Glaciers, and he shows her the film, which moves her first to embarrassment, and then to tears.
