This is the first of two videos in which Walid Haddad looks at the very badly damaged lower register on the First level Balustrade at Borobudur. He describes the scenes very well, and infers what can be seen based on the remains.
Although the panels are clearly Jātaka stories not even one of the stories has been identified as a known Jātaka story. This is partly because the panels are in very poor condition, some of the worst preserved at Borobudur. But, I also suspect, because there were many stories known to the sculptors which have also been lost.
Walid has now completed the description of the panels found at Borobudur. Remarkably he tells me all of them were taken within a 4-day period during a visit in June 2013. I am so very grateful to him for this video series, which has done in video, what I attempted to do on a webpage: describe the panels, and hopefully inspire people to go and see for themselves.
