Jātakamālā, Level 1, Borobudur, 01

Posted on June 21, 2024June 28, 2024 by Dharma Documentaries
The first of four videos looking at the Jātaka reliefs at Borobudur. This first one covers 25 stories.

Jatakamala Level 1, Balustrade, Upper Register, 01

This is another of Walid Haddad’s videos about the reliefs at Borobudur. This one covers the Upper Register on Level One, which illustrates Āryasūrya’s Jātakamālā, once of the finest pieces of Buddhist writing in Sanskrit. The stories are mainly known to the Pāḷi tradition also, but were here retold in beautiful and inspiring language.

This video covers the first 25 stories, which get roughly four panels to each story, although occasionally there are less, and so there are descriptions of 93 panels in all. Walid not only describes the main scene, but takes the time to point out many things that would otherwise be lost to an ordinary viewer.

If you are going to Borobudur I highly recommend watching the videos first so that you can get the most out of your visit. But even if you are not going, from the video you can learn in short form the gist of the story, and see how the master craftsmen at Borobudur were able to envision the scenes.
