Jātakamālā, Level 1, Borobudur, 02

Posted on June 28, 2024June 28, 2024 by Dharma Documentaries
The second part of the Jātakamālā stories at Borobudur, and also other Jātaka and Avadāna stories.

Jatakamala Level 1, Balustrade, Upper Register, 02

This is the second section of four videos on the Upper Register on Level One at Borobudur by Walid Haddad. The first section I introduced last week. This week we complete the stories drawn from the Jātakamālā; and then pass on to other Jātaka stories, only some of which have been identified.

This section covers stories 26-34 in the Jātakamālā, and then the Story of the Jackal, the Dutiful Elephant, the Story of King Śibi and the Story of Campeyya, which figure amongst other panels, which are unfortunately not yet identified. The panels covered are from no 94-185 on this wall. Walid not only describes the main scene, but takes the time to point out many things that would otherwise be lost to an ordinary viewer.

If you are going to Borobudur I highly recommend watching the videos first so that you can get the most out of your visit. But even if you are not going, from the video you can learn in short form the gist of the story, and see how the master craftsmen at Borobudur were able to envision the scenes.

if the video does not appear on the page, try reloading the page; and if that doesn’t work, leave a comment so I can update the page (the comment is not published)
