Reincarnation, Looking for a Sign

Posted on November 4, 2022November 23, 2022 by Dharma Documentaries
A story about the reincarnation of Jamgon Rinpoche, and his sceptical brother Topga.

Reincarnation, Looking for a Sign

When the 16th Karmapa passed away he left behind four young disciples who were tasked with finding his reincaration. The story of that search was told by the German filmmaker, Clemens Kuby, in his acclaimed documentary Living Buddha.

While he was filming that documentary, however, another story of reincarnation started to unfold when one of the four rinpoches engaged in the search, Jamgon, was himself killed in a car crash, and the search for his reincarnation also started.

What is different about the film this time is that Jamgon’s younger brother, Topga, was very sceptical of the idea of reincarnation, and especially regarding his deceased brother, which made him want confirmation through signs (hence the title).

The film tells Jamgon’s story, and the struggle Topga has when his brother’s reincarnation is identified, and it partially tells the story of the 4th Jamgon also, who eventually disrobed in 2015, at the age of 20, wishing to train instead as a doctor.
