A look at Kathmandu in 1979 and the challenges it was facing as it opened up to the world, and looked at ways to preserve its unique and integrated culture while modernising for the benefit of its inhabitants.
These two aims were not always easy to balance, and anyone who has been following events in Nepal will understand the dramatic challenges it has faced over the past 40 years, including the end of the monarchy, the Moaist insurgency and devastating earthquakes.
The film is mainly concerned with the preservation and restoration of its temple and house architecture, which through poverty and neglect was becoming very dilapidated at the time.
It follows the work of some of the UNESCO and other NGOs that helped in these works, and discusses the need to engage the local population, and restore skills which were in danger of being lost.
