Following on from Planet of the Humans last week is this film looking at the destructive power of biomass, which is somehow classed in a massive irony as a “green” energy.
The film centres of the destruction of the wetlands in the American south-east in particular to feed European power stations, which are trying to replace fossil fuels. The problem is biomass releases more CO2 into the air than burning fossil fuels does.
Meanwhile ancient and ecologically diverse forests are being cut down to fuel these power plants, and they are given massive government subsidies to do so. Subsidies without which the industry simply wouldn’t be profitable.
Even if all the trees in the country were cut down and fed into the power plants we still wouldn’t have anywhere near enough power, but we would have massive desertification. We have to change our lifestyles so we are less consumptive, and more sustainable. It is the only way.
