Kharkhorin & Erdene Zuu Hyid (Expoza)

Posted on December 9, 2019December 9, 2019 by Dharma Documentaries
A short look at the former capital of Mongolia and at one of its most magnificent temples.

Kharkhorin

This is from a series of films by Global Television shot all over world, giving well photographed introductions to various places, of which we will be focusing on the ones of interest to Buddhists.

The films are quite light introductions to their subjects, mainly good photography, well chosen soundtracks, and a reasonable, but sometimes inaccurate, narration giving a cultural and historical introduction to its subject.

This week’s episode looks at the Mongolian city of Kharkhorin, established by Genghis Khan when he ruled over most of the known world, and especially at the magnificent Erdene Zuu Hyid monastery.

The latter used to be one of the biggest monasteries following the Tibetan tradition, until the Stalinist period when most of it was destroyed. What remains still signifies its size and importance.

As always, in a very short amount of time a lot of history in presented in this programme and as a kind of 101 it is really worth anyone’s time.
