Zanskar, A Winter of Happiness

Posted on January 17, 2025January 17, 2025 by Dharma Documentaries
A return to Zanskar to meet the nuns of the remote Tungri Nunnery is the remote Himalayas.

Zanskar, A Winter of Happiness

A few years ago I showcased a wonderul film by Caroline Riegel in which she takes a dozen or so nuns living in Zanskar on a journey of discovery in the big land of India. Sowers of Joy was such a memorable film.

This film is a follow up from Caroline filmed around 15 years later. In that time she has organised support for the nunnery, and they now do not need to worry about having enough food and drinks; they have solar energy; and they have a small school attached to the nunnery.

The problem now is: as the modern world encroaches, they do not have enough candidates wanting to become nuns, with only three recent ordainees. What comes over so clearly in the film is how everybody in the nunnery is happy with their life, and with each other. Most people would think their life hard, even harsh, but their life is also one of joy.
