The Tale of Ayutthaya (Folkways of Indochina)

Posted on April 27, 2015March 13, 2022 by Dharma Documentaries
Two programmes from this series which look at the Thai Ayutthaya Kingdom, its history and culture (English narration, some Mandarin interviews, with subtitles).

The Tale of Ayutthaya

The second and third of these films on the history and culture of Indochina recalls the Kingdom of Ayutthaya, which superseded Sukhothai as the centre of the Tai peoples’ world.

The Kingdom lasted for nearly 500 years and is by far the longest lasting Thai kingdom in history so far.

The first of the programmes presented below looks more at the culture of the Ayutthayan period, and its survivals into the present; and also at Thai-Chinese relations over the ages.

The second film is more concerned with the temples and statues and Buddhist art works that the Kingdom produced; and then with its triumph over the Khmer and decline in face of the Burmese.
