The fourth of ten episodes about Dunhuang, looks at the murals in the caves.

The Glory of Dunhuang 4, The Unknown Master

There must have been many great artists in Dunhuang, as the murals themselves testify, but we do not know their names or even their dates in most cases, as the artists worked for the most part anonymously.

This film is an attempted reconstruction of how one artist might have worked towards the end of the period that the caves were still being worked on in the 14th century.

In its unfolding it looks at the influences that made themselves felt over the centuries as styles changed and the art became sinicised.

Unfortunately as I have mentioned before the series is marred by a strange narration, with an evident English native speaker speaking ungrammatical and incomplete sentences and mispronouning words for no known reason. Fortunately the visuals more than make up for the weak vocals.
