Dunhuang, The Heavenly Dance (6 of 8)

Posted on September 1, 2014March 16, 2022 by Dharma Documentaries
A look at the dances recorded in the murals at the Mogao Caves and how they have influenced recreations in the present day

The Heavenly Dance

This is the sixth in an eight-part series by China Central Television (CCTV) on the interplay between the murals in the Mogao Caves and contemporary art in China.

Todays’ episode focuses on the dance scenes found in the murals at the Mogao Caves and there are many of them, indeed most of the caves will have some.

We see some of the more unusual dances that are still found in China, and their analogues in the murals, and see how dance shows have become a major part of the visit to the grottoes.

We also see some of the related arts like acrobatics and hear from the experts and artists who have spent their careers studying the murals and recreating their finds in the present day.
