The Glory of Dunhuang 2, A Thousand Years Creation

This episode looks at the development of the caves at Mogao over its thousand year history, as dynasties rose and fell, and the work on the caves continued, following their inception by Le Zun in the 4th century AD.

We follow in outline the development of the excavation and construction of the caves by looking at some of the most prominent and well-known of these structures, such as earliest known cave, the Great Sculpture cave, the Nirvāṇa cave and others.

We also follow along with Peng Jinzheng, a Chinese archeologist who dedicated his life to work on these caves, and we see some of his discoveries, and visit some of the caves with him and his associates.
