The Yungang Grottoes in Shanxi Province are the oldest of the Buddhist cave complexes in China, showing the influence of Gandhāran art, and before Buddhism’s full assimilation into China.
This is the first of a series of six films from CGTN that shows the wonders of this site, and examines the context in which it arose. The first episode specifically looks at the earliest of the caves, who built them and why.
It also examines the severe backlash and suppression of Buddhism at times beginning in the 6th century, and recurring in the 9th and 10th centuries. Even though these were harsh oppressions, Buddhism survived and began to thrive again, as it does today.
