The Path of Ordination

Posted on April 22, 2022April 22, 2022 by Dharma Documentaries
A film looking at the preparatory steps in becoming a Buddhist monk in the Thai tradition.

The Path of Ordination

This film by Phra Nick Keomahavong follows three westerners as they prepare for their ordination ceremony at the Pa Pae Meditation Retreat centre in Chiang Mai district in northern Thailand.

They must first detach themselves from their worldly belongings, learn how to do the chanting, understand the need for contributing to community life, and undergo a ceremony that will distance themselves from their family.

There is quite a lot to unlearn, as well as to learn, when preparing to enter the monk’s like, and we learn some of the things that are expected from the ordainees, and how they gradually adjust to their new lifestyle.

The documentary is well filmed and edited, as always, and the narration is kept simple, and concentrates on the values that are inculcated in the monastic life.
