The Land of Dolpo

The Land of Dolpo

This is a very interesting record of an expedition made by the Austrian ethnologist Christoph von Fürer-Haimendorf and his wife in 1962 to Dolpo in the upper reaches of Nepal and on the border with Tibet.

von Fürer-Haimendorf made numerous films (over 100 hours on 16mm film) while he was studying amongst the peoples of Nepal and elsewhere and this is a particularly good example of his work.

In this film he made the arduous journey from the centre of Nepal and into the upper regions, which were very much unexplored at that time. There were no roads and the trader’s paths he travelled on were often treacherous.

He managed to record some of the religious observances of the people, including Buddhist practices and rituals, and describe their lives in this region, which at that time was largely isolated from the outside world.
