Dunhuang, Soul of the Dances (8 of 8)

Posted on September 15, 2014March 16, 2022 by Dharma Documentaries
The final part of this series focuses on the music and dance fantasia The Flowers of the Silk Road and the impact it has had in China and abroad.

Soul of the Dances

This is the final part of an eight-part series by China Central Television (CCTV) on the interplay between the murals in the Mogao Caves and contemporary art in China.

Unlike previous episodes this week the focus is on just one creation inspired by the Dunhuang murals: The Flowers of the Silk Road.

This was the first of the big music and dance presentations coming after the Cultural Revolution and ushered in a whole new era for Chinese arts.

Besides being popular over decades and hundreds of performances in China, it has also been taken on tour throughout the world and been acclaimed wherever it went.

Next week I will show a film made from this performance.

August 2016 I was in Dunhuang, visiting the Mogao Caves. I was struck by the great art, especially of the apsaras. After that I saw a beautiful dance performance of’flying apsaras’. SInce then I have been trying to find a video or DVD of this. They must exist. I wonder if you know where I could get hold of this. I could not find it on your website. Thx. Wil.
