Although it is only a small island, Sri Lanka is almost an epitome of the world we live in. It has one of the longest recorded histories, which has left indelible marks all over the island; it has a truly spectacular natural life, including landscapes, wildlife, birdlife and coral. And it traditions are centuries old and vibrant.
This film manages to give a really good overview of the island and its historical development, from the golden ages of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, and through the late middle ages, with kingdoms centered in different temporary locations, up through the colonial period and into the modern day.
The film is basically an illustrated narration, with some very fine chiascura drawings evoking the wonders of the past; and a lot of drone photography viewing places in a new way. It is a companion piece to the film last week on Unseen Tibet, and like that film, excels at what it does, making you want to visit and explore more about its subject.
The only mar on the film is the AI photo that they use for the thumbnail of the film, which has nothing to do with the otherwise great quality of the work.
