Himalaya, Land of Women

Posted on February 12, 2021March 4, 2021 by Dharma Documentaries
A look at the life of a remote community in Zanskar, and especially the lives of the women of the village.

Himalaya Land of Women.jpg

This is a very engaging film made by the French ethnologist Marianne Chaud recording her visit to the remote village of Sking in Zanskar, and her interactions with the people there.

As far as I can see Marianne speaks fluent Zanskari, and is certainly accepted into the community, with whom she seems to have good relationships.

She basically records their everyday life in this remote region, their work, homelife and ideas – and they show not a little curiosity about Marianne herself and her life.

Even though under 30 at the time of making this film Marianne is no stranger to the region having spend many years there already in different villages studying their lives and culture.

What comes across is an intimate portrait of the community and households she lives with, which is facilitated by Marianne’s ability to fit in and be a part of the community herself.
