The Story of Buddhism 11, Culture of a Continent

Posted on January 31, 2020January 31, 2020 by Dharma Documentaries
The penultimate in a series of films about Buddhism looks at the art and sensibilities of India spread throughout the East.

11, Culture of a Continent

This is the penultimate part of a series of short films about Buddhism and especially its artistic and cultural contributions in India and surrounding countries by the renowned Indian cultural historian Benoy H. Behl, whose films I have featured many times on this website.

This episode first shows how Buddhism and Buddhist ideals in art had conquered the India sub-continent, before spreading all over the East. Particularly interesting are the sublime representations of the Buddha, the Bodhisattvas and the gods, which inspired the work of the artists.

From India the ideas and culture of Buddhist India spread to Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand in SE Asia; to the Himalayan regions of Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan; and further onwards to the Far East and China, Korea and Japan, and we see representative works from all these countries.
