Nourished by the Mekong River: Eternal Celebrations

Posted on January 11, 2013November 30, 2013 by Dharma Documentaries
A documentary about the religious festivals held by the peoples found along the Mekong river, featuring especially the Water Festival (Songkran) in Luang Prabhang.

This episode of the series (the eighth) looks at the various festivals that are celebrated along the river, which are of course, also religious holidays.

Starting in Vietnam with a festival for the ancestors, and moving to China for something similar, the documentary then focuses on the Water Festivals that are held at the beginning of the rainy season in nearly all of the countries along the river’s course.

We see in detail the preparations for the Water Festival (Songkran) in Luang Prabhang, the ancient capital of Laos, with a look at the temples and their rituals during the occasion.

There is also a short trip to Myanmar, and some time in Thailand, before another festival is featured in Cambodia: the End of the Waters festival, at the end of the rainy season.
