The most successful transplant of the strict Theravāda forest monasticism has been with the Thai forest monastics in the Ajahn Chah tradition. In Germany also we find an establishment at Muttodaya in the Franconian Forest in Germany.
This film is from 2012, and at that time there were just two monks living there, Ajahn Cattamalo and Ajahn Mettiko (there are currently around 6 monks living in the expanded monastery). This film is about their strict monastic life, and the people who helped support the monastery, both traditional Buddhists and western converts.
The film follows their lives, seeing them at work, at study and out on alms round, and we also hear from the monks themselves, and the people who live around the monastery. Many of the latter are not Buddhist, but they are impressed enough by the simple lifestyle that they support the monks.
