The heritage of Gandhāra to world culture and particlarly Buddhist culture is inestimable. Gandhāra stood along the silk roads connecting India, China and the western countries, and it is a unique amalgam of these different influences that defines the culture.
Long before Buddhism even arose the Indus Valley Civilization prospered in the same regions, and it is an overview of that that the film starts with. Later when Alexandria and his army crossed over from Europe to India they left behind many aspects of Greek culture.
And when King Asoka established his reign over most of India, including Gandhāra, then the Buddhist art that was produced in this area spread its influence over all of India, and with the missions, even as far as Korea and Japan.
The film is produced by the Pakistan Embassy in Korea to highlight the Buddhist heritage found in Pakistan, and to show how long there has been a strong and beneficial relationship between the countries.
If you do not know much about Gandhāra or Pakistan the film gives a fairly good overview of the marvellous Buddhist wonders that are still to be found there. If you are a Buddhist looking for somewhere different to go to, then this might just be a good choice for you.
