The first images of the Buddha appear to have arisen in Gandhāra, which now straddles Pakistan and Afghanistan. The PBS Thai Spirit of Asia team traveled to the area to photograph some of the architectural and sculptural remains there.
They also spoke to the curators now looking after the museums and tried to understand how it records the times of its creation, and also to trace the influence of Gandhāran art on the local dress and styles in use today.
Near the end we also meet with Phra Arayawangso who spend one Rains Retreat in Gandhāra and also for the first time in a millennium recited the Pātimokkha on Gandhāran soil.
In the early part of this documentary we see some of the best art works from this early period, and at the architectural sites there is some good and evocative photography and I was particularly impressed with the drone video captures.
