Posted on April 12, 2024September 3, 2024 by Dharma Documentaries
The story of how the highest educational degrees were opened up to nuns in the Tibetan tradition.

The Geshema is Born

For women who aspire to the highest levels of learning in Buddhism there have always been difficulties along the way, but in 2012 the Dalai Lama announced that he would from then on give Geshema awards to nuns who have passed the exams.

This is the story of the difficulties that had to be overcome, and the hard work and aspirations of the nuns, and particularly of Namdol Phuntsok, in order to achieve this remarkable status. In 2016 20 nuns were given this highest of educational awards.

It is also a film therefore about the evolving landscape of Tibetan Buddhism, and how progress has been made towards achieving equality in education, which gives women new rights and standing within the tradition.
