This is a German documentary by Irja von Bernstorff looking at Bhutan, and specifically the south of the country, where it follows the work of a number of people in their communities.
One is Sonam who works for the NGO, Jangsa, which tries to save the lives of animals. Working with his local monastery he is first seen helping to save thousands of fish that were being left for dead, and later saving two yaks, which were going for slaughter.
Another is Tenzin, who has trained as a dentist and is now trying to help people in remote rural villages, who don’t have easy access to dentistry. He also tries to help people understand how their oral hygiene can be improved.
Rinzin is a shop owner, waiting a long, long time for electricity to come to their village, and when it does eventually arrive it helps her children study and her shop stay open later and earn more money.
And also there is Suresh, a 16-year old Shaman, who is still honing his skills as one of the youngest shamans in Bhutan. He is about to learn the rites for the passage from this life to the next.
