Bhutan 3, The Legend of Tiger’s Nest Monastery

The third of four films making a journey through the Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan

Bhutan 3, The Legend of Tiger’s Nest Monastery

This is the third of four films made for Korean TV about the remote Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan in the eastern Himalayas. The full title of the series is Bhutan, In Search of a Celestial Kingdom, and is hosted by “History Traveler” Kwon Ki-bong.

Given the title I really expected a bit more from this week’s offering, but it disappoints, as we only get to the monastery towards the end of the episode and not much is actually told about the legend. To top that photography is not allowed inside.

At the beginning of the episode Kwon visits another Dzong, and is given special permission to film inside, it is perched high up on a cliff, and like last weeks serves dual religious and governmental functions.

He then takes a dangerous journey to get to the other side of the country, with heavy rain and landslides, long walks and trips on stock animals. He stops off at a hot water spring along the way.

Eventually he reaches his destination. It is a beautiful place, of course, very scenic and it would seem atmospheric, and I am sure memorable. But for us we see and hear little about it.
