The basis of this Jātaka story is King Pasenadi giving 500 robes to his courtesans who then pass them on to Ven Ānanda. This causes the king outrage: Aren’t monks supposed to have only three robes? Ven. Ānanda explains that he took them to pass on to other monks who have only old robes, and when questioned reveals that even old robes are put to good use.
The Buddha then tells a tale about gratitude, that most important of virtues, and relates how a lion got stuck in the mud and was on the edge, when a jackal saved him. The lion in return took the jackal and his wife under his wing and looked after them.
This is another excellent animated story by the group around Wat San Francisco, bringing Buddhist morality into highlight with this telling story from the Jātakas, no 157.
