Chasing Buddha (Robina Courtin)

Posted on October 27, 2023September 3, 2024 by Dharma Documentaries
The life of the Australian nun Robina Courtin and her work at prisons in the US.

Chasing Buddha (Robina Courtin)

Robina Courtin is something of a renegade Australian Buddhist nun who progressed from being a political activist of women’s and black’s issues to becoming a nun and passing on the Buddha’s teaching in her own inimitable style.

The documentary that follows was made by her nephew in 1999 and won several prizes for its intimate portrait of its subject, and it has been shown at film festivals and on TV around the world.

The film begins by looking at Robina’s somewhat rough background, and her political engagement, and follows it through to her ordination in 1978 at the Tushita Meditation Centre in Dharamsala.

One of the most interesting parts of the film is to see her interacting with prisoners, some on death row, at the Kentucky State Penitentiary, where her rough and ready style wins her a number of friends and followers.
