A Simple Life (Thai Monasticism)

Posted on May 6, 2022May 6, 2022 by Dharma Documentaries
Another look at the daily life of a monk in the Thai tradition, with narration.

A Simple Life

This is another film by Phra Nick Keomahavong that looks at the monastic life in Thailand. It is quite similar to last week’s film, but this time with a different subject: an unnamed Thai monk; and it has a simple narration, explaining not only what is going on on screen, but also the philosophy behind it.

We first see the monk having his bi-monthly head shave, then see him on almsround, before he starts his cleaning duties, both communal duties and around his own living space. We see him meditating, both in sitting posture and in walking meditation, and also the very necessary study of the Buddhist scriptures.

As always these films are very well made, with good photography and editing, and an atmosphere about them that illustrates the life they depict. The films provide inspiration for both lay and monastic alike, and if you can slow down for a while, will show a different way of life to the hurly burly life too many lead.
