Eternal Smiles, Buddhist Sculptures of China

Posted on June 25, 2021June 25, 2021 by Dharma Documentaries
A look at the introduction of Buddhist sculptures in China and their development over the centuries.

Eternal Smiles, Buddhist Sculptures of China

The Buddhist sculptures in China evolved from the period of their introduction up to their full sinicization, and we have fine examples from every period illustrating this development.

This fine programme from CGTN reviews these developments, contrasts them with the art they were based on originally in Gandhāra, and how they introduced new forms, more in line with the Chinese aesthetic over the centuries.

This is also a fine overview of the various cave temples in China, and their position in the evolution of Chinese art, and we visit some of the most important centres: Kizil, Mogao, Yungang, Meiji, Longman, and a whole set of cave centres in Sichuan.

The style of presentation is also more modern than many previous videos from this production centre, and is engaging and informative, while relying on local experts to explain the development of Buddhism and Buddhist art during the relevant period.
