Discovering Tibet 1: Mysterious Map

Posted on September 4, 2020April 7, 2025 by Dharma Documentaries
A look at some of the best loved and most visited sites in Tibet

Discovering Tibet 1, Mysterious Map

This is the first of two films produced by the Tourism Development Board of Tibet and shown on China Global Television Network (CGTV) highlighting some of the region’s most visited sites and showing some of its best known cultural artifacts.

The first film bases itself on a partial Thangka map of Tibet laid out on the body of a Rakshasi, which has come down through the ages. On the Rakshasi’s heart is placed Lhasa, which is indeed the heart of Tibet, and we spend half the film discovering the riches of the capital.

But the film also visits many other places, and particularly to witness the unfolding of the mountain sized Buddha Thangka near the Drepung Monastery during the 8th month of the Tibetan year.

Some of the material is slight in this film, but worth bearing with to see some excellently photographed temples and paintings, etc. some of which would be off limits to ordinary filmmakers.
