The Story of Buddhism 07, The Intellectual Quest

Posted on January 3, 2020January 3, 2020 by Dharma Documentaries
The seventh in a series of films about Buddhism looks at the Pāla period with the rise of the great universities and Vajrayāna Buddhism.

07, The Intellectual Quest

This is the seventh part of a series of short films about Buddhism and especially its artistic and cultural contributions in India and surrounding countries by the renowned Indian cultural historian Benoy H. Behl, whose films I have featured many times on this website.

In this week’s episode Benoy first recaps on the previous developments, and then introduces us to the rise of the Pāla empire which saw the further development of the great Buddhist monastic universities at Nalanda, Vikramashila, Somapura and elsewhere.

This was also the time when Vajrayāna Buddhism was developed, and the philosophy of this school prevailed and spread abroad throughout the Himalayan regions and SE Asia. It was a particularly fruitful time for the evolution of Buddhist art, which is reflected in the works that come down to us from that time.
