Chongmyo, South Korea (Expoza)

Posted on December 16, 2019December 16, 2019 by Dharma Documentaries
A short look at a Confucian shrine near Seoul in South Korea which is a memorial for the Josean Emperors.

Chongmyo, South Korea

This is from a series of films by Global Television shot all over world, giving well photographed introductions to various places, of which we will be focusing on the ones of interest to Buddhists.

The films are quite light introductions to their subjects, mainly good photography, well chosen soundtracks, and a reasonable, but sometimes inaccurate, narration giving a cultural and historical introduction to its subject.

We continue our series with a look at the Chongmyo shrine in south Korea, which is the place for the ancestral worship of the emperors of the Josean period, which closed just over a century ago.

We first see the Confucian shrine as it is for most of the year, a mainly deserted, quiet shrine on the edge of Seoul. The shrine must cover many acres and is set in a beautiful natural setting.

But its quiet for most of the year is offset by its being the scene for highly ritualised festivities at other times. Then dignitaries and traditionalists come together to pay homage to their previous leaders.
