This is a very positive look at what can seem an almost impossible situation: the way we have been living for the past couple of hundred years, and particularly for the last 60 or 70 has been degrading the planetary resources, and making deserts out of forests.
The people sourced in this film try to show that the reverse is possible: deserts, and degraded landscapes, can and have been regreened. And it is not just in particular places, but over a wide variety of landscapes.
The film looks at regreening in China where John Liu witnessed hopelessly degraded lands brought back to life by careful management of resources; at Egypt, where a literal desert was turned into a garden; at Spain where ten of thousands of hectares lay barren because of bad central policies; and at Assam in India, where one man almost singlehandedly planted a forest and brought life back to his community.
Philosophical direction is given to the film by the Dutch writer: Willem Ferwerda, who is the director of the Commonland Foundation which promotes landscape restoration around the world.
