This is the final part of a five-part series about an expedition along the Silk Road across Central Asia, Xinjiang and Tibet. The film is mainly an Indian project (hence the name), but with production help from the UK.
In this section the team move out of the Tibetan capital of Lhasa and start their journey across the remote vastnesses on their way to Mt Everest. On the way we see some of the ancient traditions still surviving in these remote areas.
They also pass through many Buddhist centres, including the magnificent Shigatze Monastery; Tashi Lumpu, the seat of the Panchen Lama; and the Kumbum Stupa at Gyagntse, and along the way we learn more about Tibetan history, teachings and culture.
The journey more or less closes at the foot of Mt Everest, where we learn how the locals have a very different view of the mountain than the climbing mountaineers have: they regard it as the mother of the Earth, and the attempts to climb it as something close to sacrilege.
Overall this has been a very good and useful series, somewhat reminiscent in feel and content to the other classic series about the Silk Road, made by NHK in the 80s, and it probably has a similar value by now, recording worlds that have now passed.
