Ocean of Wisdom – The Life of the Dalai Lama

Posted on March 23, 2012October 22, 2013 by Dharma Documentaries
This documentary outlining not only the life of the Dalai Lama, but also the modern history of the Tibetan people, has many interviews with His Holiness, as well as historic footage.

This is a historic documentary made by Rajiv Mehrotra for Doordharshan (Indian National Television), which appears to have been made sometime in the early 1990s, and begins with the announcement of the 1989 Nobel Peace Award to His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama.

The film briefly reviews the historical background, both of His Holiness and of the Tibetan nation, and especially the period after he had escaped from Tibet during the Chinese invasion of 1959.

There is an emphasis on presenting the philosophy of Buddhism throughout the film, and showing how those ideas have shaped His Holiness’ response to what is really a national crisis.

The documentary follows the Dalai Lama, both in his personal life and in his public life, as teacher and leader of his people; we also see him acting as their representative on trips abroad, and there is footage of him in England, where he is received by monastics of the Benedictine Order.

Although there are many films now about His Holiness, this still has some unique footage, and the Dalai Lama as always manages to get across the message of wisdom, love and compassion with great humility.
