Wang Erchuan, Thangka Collector – Dharma Documentaries

A collector’s love of thangka painting, and his efforts to promote and preserve it.

Wang Erchuan is a thangka collector from China, who specializes in collecting Nepali thangkas, of which he has bought around 1,000 or more by now. As far as we can see from this interview and look at his collection, he is buying mainly from living artists.

Erchuan tells the story of how he first fell in love with thangka collecting, and tells a number of stories from his collecting days, illustrating his persistence, his love of the art and artists, and some of the adventures he has had as a collector.

What comes across is someone who really loves the art form, who wishes to contribute to its preservation, and who is spending money trying to help boys who wish to learn the art in the future. What we don’t ever get to know is how Erchuan made his money, where he lives, or where his gallery is.
