Isidāsī Therī, A Journey of Kamma

Posted on July 31, 2026July 11, 2026 by Dharma Documentaries
The many lives of the person who became Isidāsī Therī, and attained liberation during the time of the Buddha.

Isidāsī Therī

This is the remarkable story over many lives of the woman (originally a man) who became Isidāsī Therī in her last life during the time of the Buddha. Her story in contained in the Therīgāthā Commentary, which this animation draws on.

The main theme is how kamma works out over many lives. In one life she was a goldsmith who led a very adulterous life, ruining families and young women in the search for his own selfish pleasure.

The result is terrible suffering over manay lives, and rejection three times in her last life. Eventually, distraught at her situation she sees a bhikkhunī on her alms round, and decides to return with her to the nunnery, where she ordains.

She eventually gains Arahatta and knowledge of her terrible journey in saṁsāra through accessing her past lives. The story is well told by the team around Wat San Francisco as always, and it is a story that will stay with you.
