The position of nuns in Buddhism has been of concern for some time. This film looks particularly at the educational opportunities for nuns in Tibetan Buddhism, and especially the aspirations of one young nun, Kelsang Youdon, who is from the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, and now studying in Dharamsala.
The film, which is made in 2012 by Zrinka Jančić, also features interviews with two leading western nuns from the Tibetan tradition, Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo, who is the longest ordained western monastic; and Geshe Makelsang Wangmo, a German, who is the first nun to achieve Geshe status.
The film also has interviews with a number of prominent monks who are supporting the nuns in their studies, including Geshe Tsultrim Syatso, who teaches at Gaden Choeling Nunnery; and Geshe Lonsang Yonten. The position of nuns is not so favourable still at present, but it is improving with each year.
